Frequently Asked Questions
What is a QEI certified inspector?
A QEI, or Qualified Elevator Inspector, is a professional who has completed a rigorous background check, formal training, and a comprehensive examination process in accordance with the ASME QEI-1 Standard. QEI certification must be actively maintained through ongoing education and renewal requirements. In Pennsylvania, inspectors must hold QEI certification in addition to being UCC certified and licensed by the state in order to perform legally recognized elevator inspections.
Are elevator inspections required by law?
Yes. In most jurisdictions across the United States, elevators, escalators, moving walks, wheelchair lifts, and dumbwaiters are required by law to be inspected at regular intervals by a certified inspector. In order for a Certificate of Operation to remain valid and be renewed, all required inspections and periodic tests must be completed by a QEI certified inspector. Failure to maintain inspections can result in loss of your Certificate of Operation and potential liability exposure.
What is the inspection process?
Once you contact Alpine Elevator Professionals, we assign one of our licensed representatives to your location and schedule a convenient time for the inspection or test. Our inspector will arrive on site, perform a thorough evaluation of your elevator equipment, and ensure all applicable code requirements are met. After the inspection is complete, we prepare and file all required reports with the appropriate Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) on your behalf, and provide you with a copy for your records.
What happens after an inspection in Pennsylvania?
In Pennsylvania, upon completion of an inspection or witnessed periodic test, all reports are submitted directly to the Department of Labor and Industry, Elevator Division. Your building receives a copy of the same report, and additional copies are archived in our office and can be provided upon request. The Department of Labor and Industry, Elevator Division is responsible for issuing new certificates of operation once all requirements have been satisfied.
